The Grand Canyon
The weather was perfect. I took over 100 shots. I was halfway down the trail when my batteries went dead. What a fucking n00b. So, I made the quarter-mile trek twice. The first time I came back, I was huffing and puffing, wtf!!!. Then I realised that I was at 8255 feet above sea level. What a fucking n00b. I live at sea level, plenty of air down there.
I put some of the better ones up on my gallery. The upload speed here is good, but I don’t feel like editing 100 photos right now.
It’s over 95 degrees here in St. George, Utah. There isn’t enough air conditioning for this much heat.
Two thumbs up for the Marriot in St. George for decent web access. People really should learn to lock down their access points.

from Cedar City, Utah
I posted some shots from the first day. I didn’t make it to Boise like I planned due to a furious thunderstorm. So I stayed in Nampa, Idaho just 15 miles short. I-84 up the Columbia gorge was nice. 70 mph all the way. I left Nampa and set the cruise control at 82 mph. I made good time until I hit a deluge that lasted from Ogden to Provo. I didn’t get to see any of Salt Lake City. Just an occaisional glimpse of the Rockies.
There isn’t much to see along I-15. Just desert and scrub brush. One picture looks like the rest.
I am heading to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon today. Then on to Henderson, Nevada to see my dad.

teh rental
It’s a 2005 Chevy Malibu. Only had 13 miles on it when I picked it up. 3500 cc motor, automatic, and 140 mph speedometer. The steering ratio could be a bit faster. The transmission is real smooth. Six speaker audio with a CD player. And yes, it rocks.
Two new features, the music will keep playing after shut-down, until the door is opened. And the foot brake must be pushed a little farther to release it. I spent 10 minutes looking for the fucking release, until I remembered a story someone once told me.
It was 85 degrees at Alki Beach. Hot, hot, hot. I had lunch at The Sunfish seafood restaurant. The salmon was delicious.
And so was the view.

ready to go
The arrival of the laptop completes the preparations for the road trip. I will pick up a rental car in Seattle tomorrow. I think I will go to Alki Beach for some lunch, then drive back around Puget Sound. It will give me a chance to test out the Nikon D70 and the Acer TravelMate 4502LMi. I will be leaving on Sunday for Boise, Idaho. Monday, I will be in Cedar City, Utah. That will put me on the North Rim on Tuesday. I may just go to see my dad, then go to the Canyon.
Decisions, decisions.
So I should be in Mesa on Thursday to see very good friend. Harry G., my rehab counselor.
That leaves me with nothing to do, in Arizona, next Friday.
I just hate it when that happens.

order up
I chose the Acer Travelmate 4500. It was the lowest price notebook with a DVD burner that I could find.
The G4 Powerbook is nice, but too expensive at this point. I looked carefully at the IBM Thinkpads, no DVD burner and 256 mB ram did them in.
With second day air, it was $983.

why did I go into work today?
I had barely sat down when the graveyard carpenter leadman comes into the office and goes on a rant about why he doesn’t have the tools he needs, his boss is a dick, and why the fuck are we being transferred to swing shift next week?!?!?!?!?! Where’s my coffee? Aww, shit, now the tinbenders are going at. OOOOO who brought the doughnuts!
/me nods caringly
thanks for the doughnuts Rudy
It’s time’s like this that I look forward to giving training.

trip details
The mileage to Henderson is 1300 miles. I can rent a car from Alamo for around $350. I am planning on nine driving days and seven off days. I would like to take a trip to Phoenix and maybe Tuscon. I may not get this way for some time.
A trip around the Grand Canyon may be in order. Then it’s off to San Diego, L.A., and San Francisco.
And yes, the D70 is here. I need to order a waterproof enclosure. Drooooooooooooooooooool.

road trip
I am going to be taking a trip to Henderson, Nevada very soon.
My father is not well and I really should go see him.
Anyway, I was thinking of driving the inland route down to Henderson, then taking the coast road back. I expect a D70 any day now. Wolf Camera has the deal. I’ll have sixteen days off. Hooray.
Now I need a laptop. That G4 Powerbook looks really nice.

/me grins the most evil of grins
I have installed PHP Nuke on my site. It took a bit of fiddling to get the database setup because the intructions in the file are out of date and phpnuke.org was a PITA to navigate through. Now all is well. I’ll get to the forums later.

It’s official
On Monday I will be taking over as the Zone Manager on the USS Ohio and Michigan. It’s to bad we have to lose a very capable man in Mr. Fitzpatrick.
