Pedestrians…

About a week ago, I started doing some bike riding to get some exercise. All is going well, the first couple of days were very rough. I am getting a little better everyday. The area around here is quite hilly, typical of Western Washington. I have to either start up the hill, or end up the hill, truly up hill both ways.

Going down the hill takes me to the waterfront of the Port Washington Narrows. At the bottom is Lion’s Field, a complex of softball fields with a path for the pedestrians. The path is paved about eight feet wide and snakes all around the park. At one end is the “pedestrians only” sign. And since I come from the other end, I don’t see it. :)

Yesterday I wasn’t even ON the STUPID path when someone said, of course, “this is for walking only”. I could have stopped and said something, but I kept on riding. About fifty feet later, the area between the fence and the water narrows so that riding through there, I must take the path. I am a very courteous rider and give the walkers plenty of room. But sometimes it just burns me up that people have to say something just to say something. Whether it’s justified or not.

Come on people, don’t you have anything better to do than flap your lips for no apparent reason?

That was the second time in a week. The first time I WAS ON the path, but there wasn’t anyone around, only one angry lady that yelled at me from about fifty feet away. Again I gave her plenty of room. Get a life people.

Teh Rental…

The rental for this trip was a 2008 Chevy HHR LS version. With a 2.4 liter engine and power everything. After 4200 miles, I can say it’s a sweet ride. It performed very well for a 4-cylinder with an automatic. It looks great and is very comfortable. I had no back pain and my carpal tunnel was non-existent.

Teh Rental

The only digs I have are:

  • There is wind noise at about 65. A whistling from the drivers side mirror.
  • The automatic transmission doesn’t allow one to drive in “D”. The constant down shifting from overdrive is annoying. Especially in mountain passes when I like to go into “D”.
  • When using the remote to unlock the vehicle, the horn blasts twice. With no way to defeat it. I checked many forums to find a way and there is none. Not even a trip to the dealer will defeat it. Nothing like announcing to the world, my car is unlocked.
  • As is typical with front wheel drive cars, the torque steer during a down shift is a bit more pronounced with the 215/50/17 tires. It can be a hand full at 75, but if one is prepared, it is handled easily.
  • The window controls are on the console between the driver and passenger. This makes it a chore to open the driver’s side window at the drive-thru windows.

At less than $20,000 in this configuration, it’s a steal and a dream to drive. None of the digs are deal breakers in my book. I’d buy one in an instant if I desired.

The city of Angels…

This will be the first time I have ever actually stayed in L.A. I have been through here twice and both times traffic sucked. This was to be no different. I was in stop and go traffic from I-405 all the way to the exit for the Wilshire Grand Hotel.

I stopped along the way and met with Darrel Grisham in Nipomo, CA. He had his stream up so we chatted with my friends on the Wyldryde.org IRC network for a couple of hours. Much fun was had by all.

Pismo Beach FTW…

My most favorite place on the planet. Besides western Washington. If I could afford to live in Pismo Beach, I’d move there in an instant.

Crescent City

The weather is nice and the sunsets are fantastic. A very laid back hippie town. :)

The redwoods and beyond…

The winding road from Grant’s Pass to Crescent City is very fun to drive in a sports car. The weather cleared enough to get some pics from the beach in Crescent City.

I made it to Santa Rosa this day. Eureka is a nice little town.

The second leg…

The drive to Grant’s Pass was in and out of the rain. After stopping for lunch, I missed most of the rain. There was a short snow shower after I checked into the motel. The hills around Grant’s Pass were covered in snow. And I really didn’t need to see the “Snow Area: carry chains or tractions tires” sign cuz the rental didn’t have either.

I was going to California, wtf do I need snow tires for?

The first leg…

I wanted to get the fuck out of dodge so bad I left late on Friday night in a rainstorm. The driving was ok, but the retards on the freeway made me stop in Centralia. I stayed at the Motel 6 only because I couldn’t find the Holiday Inn Express. Someone didn’t do their due diligence…

Yea, Motel 6. Where the internet doesn’t exist and the towels are like sandpaper.

Lovely.

so it begins…

I picked up the U-Haul yesterday and loaded the heavy stuff. I’m off to Seattle today to pick up the rental car. My back is killing me and Mike is being a fucking retard. Nothing but whining and complaining. Oh, and he’s drinking. Just what I need. I sooooo hate this.

Only one more day of this shit.

road trip 2008…

On February 29, I’ll be leaving for the Convention of Champions. This year it’s being held in the Los Angeles Convention Center. I’ll be staying at the Wilshire Grand for five nights. I’m taking the scenic route to L.A. I hope to meet with some friends along the way.

After the convention I’m heading to Phoenix to do some business for a friend. At that point, I’m undecided. Most likely I will head to Vegas, of course, and then to San Diego, or maybe the Grand Canyon. Or….
